NNP 12th Anniversary

February 3, 2020

On Feb. 3, 2008, I began this blog, and I’m thinking it might be about time to make a few changes.

I’ve been told I need more photos, especially of book covers. Although I’ve privately turned my nose up at this trend, I realize that sometimes I cut my nose off to spite my face; it’s not bending any big, important principle to let more visually-focused people see what the book I want to talk about looks like. So I’m going to be trying some book cover photos over the next few months.

IMG_3614This month is also the second anniversary of Melian coming to live with us, so here’s her photo.

Do you have suggestions for more blog improvements?

Congratulations Jeanne! That’s an impressive length of time to keep a blog. Melian looks beautiful.

Every once in a while a blogger has to change it up.
Melian is beautiful this time of year because she has a lot of fur. She’s hard to photograph, though. Ron was waving his hand at her so she’d look up and we could see her eyes.

Melian is such a gorgeous cat. I think it’s amazing that you’ve managed to keep up with the blog for so long; I don’t seem to have the energy these days (although I do more analog journaling about my books etc.)

    • February 4, 2020 11:02 am

I usually find the energy because I’m hoping for someone to talk to about books, you know?

I like photos. And book covers. And cats. I would still read your blog without them, but including any of these would be a plus for me. Happy blog anniversary!

      Glad to hear it! Thanks.

I’m with Lory. I would read your blog without pictures of any or all of those three, but they are definite perks. The tease of a picture doe make me more likely to look through right away.

Interesting. Okay, I will work on doing more of this.

Happy blogiversary! 12 years is a lifetime of blogging!

    • February 4, 2020 11:03 am

It kind of is. That’s one of the reasons it’s time to make a few changes!

    Happy blogiversary!

Personally I’m not a fan of book covers or other graphics taking up a lot of posting space: sometimes a post seems to be 50% graphics I have to scroll through to get back to the substance! But apparently other people feel differently and it’s not like my blog is a smash hit so what do I know. 😉

Ha! I’m glad to get some validation on what I suspect are kind of old-fashioned and curmudgeonly feelings. But yes, I’m going with the “what do I know” attitude, so I don’t get more curmudgeonly about blogging, of all things.

Happy blogiversary! 🥳 I’m definitely a visual blogger — I like to at least include an image of the book cover. But I try not to overwhelm readers with visuals, especially gifs. Those can get very distracting if overused. But I do use pictures to break up longer posts, so the reader doesn’t get conversely overwhelmed with long blocks of text. It’s all about balance.

    • February 4, 2020 11:05 am

I really don’t understand how anyone can get overwhelmed with text. I mean, it’s text! You can read it! But I am told that other people like visuals, so have been trying to incorporate more in my writing center publicity (much of it directed at 18-21 year olds) and now on the blog.

      • February 4, 2020 12:27 pm

To me, it depends on how long the post is. If it’s very long, I feel like visuals give the reader a breather (especially if I’m reading on my phone). I also sometimes use images to signal a new section, or to enhance/emphasize something I said (like if I want to show my reaction to a plot point, I’ll include a funny gif).

The important thing is to be true to your own style and what you feel comfortable with.

Very happy blogging birthday to you! I have no suggestions but I support whatever you decide to do!

One of my own resolutions for this year is to try to be more consistent about bloghopping to other folks’ blogs — I miss doing that! And ugh yes I guess that I should be more reliable when it comes to including pictures of book covers. I am just lazy. 😛

    • February 4, 2020 11:12 am

Thanks! It’s nice to think about you coming by more.
I don’t really even notice whether there are pictures or not in your posts. A friend of mine who teaches physics once made a powerpoint for our students that showed the same page with two different views–hers and mine. My view was all text. Hers was all graph.

Congrats on 12 years! That is truly a dedication! Book picture is a great improvement because I like them.

    • February 5, 2020 8:13 am

Ok, good to know that another reader likes the idea of photos here. Thanks.

  9. February 5, 2020 2:56 pm

Happy Blogiversary. 12 years is quite the milestone. I am happy to read your posts with or without pictures! But I always approve of cat pictures, just sayin’. 🙂

    • February 5, 2020 3:08 pm

I’m always happy to inundate the interwebs with more photos of my cats!

  10. February 5, 2020 4:15 pm

First of all, happy anniversary! Second, I don’t need to see book covers or have lots of photos of any kind and it’s your blog so you should do what makes you happy. Also, Melian is a very pretty kitty. It is so hard to photograph black cats. I have lots of Waldo photos and very few of Dickens because he mostly comes out as a black blob with orange eyes.

    • February 5, 2020 8:58 pm

Thanks! Some of my friends who were listening to me complain about the diminishing number of blog commenters suggested that photos (and instagram tags) might help. So we’ll see.
And yes, black cats are very hard to photograph! There’s a whole meme about it, how when you take a photo what you get is “the void.”

      • February 6, 2020 12:10 pm

hahahaha! The void! I love it! Off to go find that meme! 😀

  11. February 8, 2020 12:47 pm

Congrats on 12 years! It feels like a long time and no time at all.

I don’t feel one way or another on visuals in blog posts. I like to include book covers, but that’s about all I ever do. I feel like longevity in blogging sometimes comes from just doing what you please. But I know what you mean about wondering if it’s time to change things up. I’ve slowed down on reviewing myself and may do more round-up posts with mini-reviews when I don’t have much to say. I don’t want to just keep doing the same thing out of habit if I’m not enjoying it much anymore.

    • February 11, 2020 11:45 am

I definitely think longevity in blogging comes from doing what you please; it’s what I’ve always done. It also comes from a sense of having readers, though, so I thank you for commenting to say you’re still here.
